The existing mattress market consists of a wide variety of versions that appropriate for eco-friendly purchasers– as well as mattresses that are mistakenly marketed as being ‘Best Organic Futon Mattress’.
While we are still developing a full article for this topic, please see a full breakdown of our favorite below.
Founded in 2015 as an eco-friendly answer to the bed-in-a-box boom, Avocado has considering that become among the premier green companies in the sleep space. In addition to the brand’s flagship mattress (which we’re having a look at today), the company also sells green pillows, mattress pad protectors, toppers, natural wood bedroom furnishings, a just recently released foundation and even an all-vegan mattress.
We will not get into any of these other products in this review, but we will take a moment in the future to size up the Avocado versus some of its fiercest competition in the game, particularly the Saatva and Zenhaven mattresses. But before we do any of that, we’ve got ta determine what’s cooking beneath this completely organic cover!
Best Organic Futon Mattress – What Is It Made of?
The Avocado Green Mattress features a simple, two-layer design of latex and took coils. While there’s not a lot to the bed’s 11″ profile, the simplicity is implied to create a structure that’s bouncy, taut, and ultra-supportive.
Need more details? I got you! Let’s have a look at this bed, layer by layer.
I need to keep in mind that the Green Mattress can be found in both Standard and Pillowtop version, that includes an additional 2″ layer of latex up top for included comfort. For this review I evaluated the Pillowtop.
Cover– Crafted with organic cotton and hand-tufted with GOTS organic certified wool from their co-owned wool collective. The cover is soft, breathable, and created to wick moisture far from the body.
Pillow Top– What I’m calling the pillow top layer is comprised of GOLS organic licensed latex. This material has some wonderful bounce to it, so works to keep the sleeper positioned more on top of the structure than in it. Buoyancy aside, latex is likewise known for its cooling properties, which will assist to regulate temperatures throughout the night.
Assistance– The bulk of the mattress is comprised of this high pocketed coil system. The separately wrapped coils here double down on the bounce of the mattress, bringing an enjoyable lift to the structure. Though swiped coil system are nothing new, what’s distinct about Avocado’s is that it’s broken down into “5 strategic zones,” which, according to the brand name, help to support the shoulders, hips, and lower back in different ways. We’ll explore firmness and pressure relief in a second, but for now I’ll just state that this targeted assistance is really subtle, and most likely won’t jump out to you too much as you extend on the bed.
Ideas: With only a single layer of latex standing between you and the thick area of pocketed coils, you’re likely to experience this bed as quite bouncy and company. Already, I can tell this mattress is going to be best for combination sleepers with environment-friendly perceptiveness.

How Does the Avocado Mattress Feel?
After examining the Avocado’s product cosmetics, it’s time to see how these materials affect its overall feel, beginning with firmness.
As with any feel element, firmness is a subjective procedure that can alter a lot depending on one’s body size, shape, and weight. Therefore, it would be a bit misleading to just report my firmness ideas here, as my body is bound to vary from yours. To mitigate this bias, I welcomed a few of my coworkers into the studio to evaluate this bad young boy out with me.
Ball game you see listed below is the average of all our individual firmness scores!
The Avocado has a supportive feel and medium firmness.
Though we arrived on a typical ranking of 6.6, our actions were type of all over the place with this one, ranging as they did from a soft 6 to an ultra-firm 7.5. Considering the market standard of 6.5 for medium firmness, it seems this bed straddles that line in a pretty engaging way.
I personally provided the bed a 6 as I discovered its cover and latex comfort layer assisted to soften up the firmness of the taken coil system. For some of my colleagues, however, they were truly just able to experience the coils as they rapidly pressed through the gentle convenience layer. Regardless of firmness, we were all in arrangement that the structure is very bouncy, which informs me this could be an excellent choice for combination sleepers, especially those who turn between their backs and sides in the night.

I should also note that if you like the environment-friendly profile and bounce of the mattress, however certainly require something a bit more plush, you can always opt to have an extra Avocado pillow top included onto the bed for $400.

Checking out the Mattresses.

When I think of pressure relief, I’m mainly worried about how well (or not well) the mattress in question is able to reduce tension at sensitive spots like the shoulders, hips, and lower back.
To figure all that out, I like to utilize an useful dandy pressure map. I roll this baby out, hop aboard, and let the gizmo do the rest! As I move around, the device tracks how my body’s interacting with the bed in real time, and creates a colored “map” to demonstrate the pressure it experiences. Locations of low pressure are demarcated in blue, and areas of high pressure remain in red.
Revealing the pressure map results for the Avocado.
Back– Stretching out on my back, I felt some nice pressure relief as the top layer of latex foam filled out the space at my lumbar region. In addition, I found it exceptionally easy to walk around and change positions, which could be great for those uneasy sleepers in the lot.
Side– Though I felt some initial comfort on my side, the longer I stayed in this position, the more pressure I experienced. That’s not too surprising, as rigorous side sleepers tend to put in a great deal of force on their shoulders and hips. Nevertheless, it does tell me that this bed might be a bit too firm for those who just oversleep the lateral position. But, back/side combo sleepers ought to be just fine!

Stomach– Turning onto my stomach, I felt alright, not terrific. I believed the stolen coils would do more to raise my hips in line with my shoulders, but I was sort of disappointed to find that they instead sank out of positioning. This caused some stress at my lower back, so if you are a strict stomach sleeper taking a look at the Avocado I would opt for the basic variation.
Evaluating out the Avocado with Pillow Top and Motion Transfer.
For my next test, I’m going to analyze the Avocado’s motion transfer, or the amount of movement detectable from one side of the bed to the other. An important section for all sleepers, but specifically so for those who share their beds with a partner.
To highlight this movement transfer, I dropped a 10 lb. steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it triggered: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

Outcomes of the movement transfer test on the Avocado.
These are extremely high movement transfer results, so you’re most likely to feel your bed mate’s every toss and turn. This isn’t too unexpected considering how bouncy this bed is, but could be something for you to consider if you have a particularly agitated partner.

The Saatva is built with a timeless innerspring feel, so is a fair bit firmer than the Avocado.
Its coil-on-coil building is also supremely supportive and works to promote a healthy back alignment no matter the position.
All of this makes it a terrific mattress for back sleepers looking for firm support and mobility.
It’s also less costly than the Avocado, beginning at $599.

The Zenhaven is an all-latex mattress made by Saatva (not a bed-in-a-box).
It’s also flippable, with two different firmnesses folks can change in between by just turning over the bed.
Given that it’s developed completely of natural latex, the bed is both extremely bouncy and very cooling, which could be a nice combo for anyone who overheats.
In terms of expense, it’s the most pricey of the three, beginning at $1,299.
