Several consumers today prefer to buy products that are made from all-natural products, have a fairly very little ecological footprint, as well as consist of few (if any kind of) chemicals that are hazardous to human wellness. Mattress customers are no different. The existing mattress market consists of a wide range of designs that appropriate for eco-friendly buyers– as well as mattresses that are erroneously marketed as being ‘Best Organic Mattress’.
While we are still crafting a full blurb for this topic, please see a full rundown of our favorite below.
Founded in 2015 as an environment-friendly answer to the bed-in-a-box boom, Avocado has since become one of the premier green companies in the sleep space. In addition to the brand name’s flagship mattress (which we’re having a look at today), the company also offers green pillows, mattress pad protectors, toppers, natural wood bedroom furniture, a just recently launched foundation and even an all-vegan mattress.
We will not enter any of these other products in this review, but we will take a minute in the future to size up the Avocado against some of its fiercest competition in the video game, specifically the Saatva and Zenhaven mattresses. But prior to we do any of that, we’ve got ta figure out what’s cooking below this totally organic cover!
Best Organic Mattress – What Is It Made of?
The Avocado Green Mattress features a straightforward, two-layer design of latex and swiped coils. While there’s not a lot to the bed’s 11″ profile, the simplicity is suggested to develop a structure that’s bouncy, tight, and ultra-supportive.
Need more information? I got you! Let’s have a look at this bed, layer by layer.
I must note that the Green Mattress comes in both Standard and Pillowtop version, that includes an extra 2″ layer of latex up top for included convenience. For this evaluation I checked the Pillowtop.
Cover– Crafted with organic cotton and hand-tufted with GOTS organic accredited wool from their co-owned wool cumulative. The cover is soft, breathable, and developed to wick wetness away from the body.
Pillow Top– What I’m calling the pillow top layer is comprised of GOLS organic accredited latex. This product has some wonderful bounce to it, so works to keep the sleeper positioned more on top of the structure than in it. Buoyancy aside, latex is likewise understood for its cooling properties, which will assist to regulate temperature levels throughout the night.
Assistance– The bulk of the mattress is consisted of this tall pocketed coil system. The separately wrapped coils here double down on the bounce of the mattress, bringing an enjoyable lift to the structure. Though filched coil system are absolutely nothing brand-new, what’s distinct about Avocado’s is that it’s broken down into “five tactical zones,” which, according to the brand, assistance to support the shoulders, hips, and lower back in different ways. We’ll check out firmness and pressure relief in a second, but for now I’ll just say that this targeted support is really subtle, and likely will not jump out to you excessive as you stretch out on the bed.
Thoughts: With only a single layer of latex standing between you and the thick section of pocketed coils, you’re likely to experience this bed as quite bouncy and firm. Currently, I can tell this mattress is going to be best for combo sleepers with environment-friendly perceptiveness.
Revealing the materials used in the layers of the Avocado
How Does the Avocado Mattress Feel?
After taking a look at the Avocado’s product makeup, it’s time to see how these materials impact its overall feel, beginning with firmness.
Similar to any feel element, firmness is a subjective procedure that can alter a lot depending on one’s body size, shape, and weight. For that reason, it would be a bit misleading to only report my firmness ideas here, as my body is bound to differ from yours. To mitigate this predisposition, I welcomed a few of my coworkers into the studio to test this bad kid out with me.
The score you see below is the average of all our personal firmness ratings!
The Avocado has an encouraging feel and medium firmness.
Though we arrived at a typical score of 6.6, our reactions were kind of all over the place with this one, varying as they did from a soft 6 to an ultra-firm 7.5. Thinking about the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness, it seems this bed straddles that line in a pretty compelling way.
I personally provided the bed a 6 as I discovered its cover and latex convenience layer assisted to soften up the firmness of the pocketed coil system. For some of my colleagues, nevertheless, they were really only able to experience the coils as they quickly pressed through the gentle convenience layer. Regardless of firmness, we were all in agreement that the structure is very bouncy, which tells me this could be a good pick for combination sleepers, especially those who turn between their backs and sides in the night.
Relaxing on this Mattress.
I need to also keep in mind that if you love the eco-friendly profile and bounce of the mattress, but absolutely need something a little more luxurious, you can constantly decide to have an additional Avocado pillow top included onto the bed for $400.
The Best Organic Mattress is Made up of 100% natural latex and took coils, the Avocado is as eco-conscious as it is comfortable.
Checking out the Mattresses.
While I could keep explaining my experience on the Avocado in words, I ‘d much rather show you what I’m speaking about than simply keep informing you about it. So, to that end, I’m going to stroll you through a couple of my preferred tests for examining Pressure Relief and Motion Transfer.
When I consider pressure relief, I’m mainly concerned with how well (or not well) the mattress in question is able to alleviate tension at sensitive spots like the shoulders, hips, and lower back.
To figure all that out, I like to use a convenient dandy pressure map. I roll this child out, hop aboard, and let the gizmo do the rest! As I move, the device tracks how my body’s engaging with the bed in real time, and produces a colored “map” to demonstrate the pressure it experiences. Locations of low pressure are demarcated in blue, and locations of high pressure remain in red.

Back– Stretching out on my back, I felt some good pressure relief as the leading layer of latex foam filled out the area at my lumbar region. Additionally, I found it exceptionally simple to move and change positions, which could be fantastic for those agitated sleepers in the lot.
Side– Though I felt some preliminary comfort on my side, the longer I remained in this position, the more pressure I experienced. That’s not too surprising, as rigorous side sleepers tend to apply a great deal of force on their shoulders and hips. However, it does tell me that this bed might be a bit too firm for those who just oversleep the lateral position. But, back/side combo sleepers should be just fine!

Stomach– Turning onto my stomach, I felt alright, not great. I believed the pocketed coils would do more to raise my hips in line with my shoulders, however I was kind of disappointed to discover that they rather sank out of alignment. This triggered some stress at my lower back, so if you are a stringent stomach sleeper looking at the Avocado I would go with the basic version.
Testing out the Avocado with Pillow Top and Movement Transfer.
For my next test, I’m going to examine the Avocado’s movement transfer, or the amount of movement noticeable from one side of the bed to the other. A crucial area for all sleepers, however specifically so for those who share their beds with a partner.
To highlight this movement transfer, I dropped a 10 lb. steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and determined the disturbance it triggered: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
Avocado Motion Transfer
Results of the motion transfer test on the Avocado.
These are incredibly high motion transfer results, so you’re most likely to feel your bed mate’s every toss and turn. This isn’t too unexpected considering how bouncy this bed is, however could be something for you to consider if you have a particularly agitated partner.

Differentiation of Organic Mattress Companies
Now that we’ve got the Avocado pretty much well and arranged, let’s take a second to compare it to a few of its biggest competition: the Saatva and Zenhaven mattresses.
The Saatva is built with a timeless innerspring feel, so is quite a bit firmer than the Avocado.
Its coil-on-coil construction is also very helpful and works to promote a healthy spine positioning no matter the position.
All of this makes it a fantastic mattress for back sleepers in search of firm support and movement.
It’s also more economical than the Avocado, starting at $599.
Check out my full Saatva mattress evaluation and see why it arrived at my guide to the very best Mattresses for Back Pain.
The Zenhaven is an all-latex mattress made by Saatva (not a bed-in-a-box).
It’s also flippable, with two different firmnesses folks can switch between by simply turning over the bed.
Because it’s built entirely of natural latex, the bed is both extremely bouncy and incredibly cooling, which could be a great combination for anybody who gets too hot.
In regards to cost, it’s the most expensive of the 3, starting at $1,299.
