Several customers today favor to get items that are made from all-natural products, have a fairly very little environmental footprint, as well as include few (if any type of) chemicals that are unsafe to human health and wellness. Mattress customers are no different. The present mattress market consists of a variety of designs that appropriate for green customers– along with mattresses that are incorrectly advertised as being ‘Best Organic Mattress For 2019’.
While we are still creating a full blurb for this topic, please see a full rundown of our favorite below.
Founded in 2015 as an environment-friendly answer to the bed-in-a-box boom, Avocado has given that grown into among the premier green companies in the sleep space. In addition to the brand name’s flagship mattress (which we’re taking a look at today), the company also sells green pillows, mattress pad protectors, toppers, natural wood bed room furnishings, a recently launched structure and even an all-vegan mattress.
We will not enter into any of these other products in this review, but we will take a minute later on to size up the Avocado versus some of its fiercest competitors in the video game, namely the Saatva and Zenhaven mattresses. But before we do any of that, we’ve got ta determine what’s cooking underneath this totally organic cover!
Best Organic Mattress For 2019 – What Is It Made of?
The Avocado Green Mattress includes an uncomplicated, two-layer design of latex and pocketed coils. While there’s not a lot to the bed’s 11″ profile, the simpleness is indicated to produce a structure that’s bouncy, taut, and ultra-supportive.
Required more information? I got you! Let’s take a look at this bed, layer by layer.
I must note that the Green Mattress comes in both Standard and Pillowtop variation, which includes an extra 2″ layer of latex up top for included comfort. For this review I evaluated the Pillowtop.
Cover– Crafted with organic cotton and hand-tufted with GOTS organic certified wool from their co-owned wool collective. The cover is soft, breathable, and created to wick moisture far from the body.
Pillow Top– What I’m calling the pillow top layer is comprised of GOLS organic certified latex. This product has some wonderful bounce to it, so works to keep the sleeper placed more on top of the structure than in it. Buoyancy aside, latex is likewise known for its cooling residential or commercial properties, which will assist to control temperature levels throughout the night.
Assistance– The bulk of the mattress is consisted of this high pocketed coil system. The individually covered coils here double down on the bounce of the mattress, bringing an enjoyable lift to the structure. Though swiped coil system are absolutely nothing new, what’s distinct about Avocado’s is that it’s broken down into “five tactical zones,” which, according to the brand, help to support the shoulders, hips, and lower back in different ways. We’ll explore firmness and pressure relief in a second, but for now I’ll just state that this targeted assistance is very subtle, and likely won’t leap out to you excessive as you extend on the bed.
Ideas: With just a single layer of latex standing between you and the thick section of pocketed coils, you’re most likely to experience this bed as quite bouncy and firm. Already, I can tell this mattress is going to be best for combo sleepers with environmentally friendly perceptiveness.
Revealing the materials used in the layers of the Avocado
How Does the Avocado Mattress Feel?
After analyzing the Avocado’s material cosmetics, it’s time to see how these materials affect its general feel, starting with firmness.
Just like any feel element, firmness is a subjective measure that can change a lot depending upon one’s body size, shape, and weight. For that reason, it would be a bit deceptive to only report my firmness thoughts here, as my body is bound to differ from yours. To mitigate this predisposition, I invited a few of my coworkers into the studio to evaluate this bad young boy out with me.
The score you see below is the average of all our personal firmness scores!
The Avocado has a helpful feel and medium firmness.
Though we landed on an average rating of 6.6, our reactions were kind of all over the place with this one, ranging as they did from a soft 6 to an ultra-firm 7.5. Considering the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness, it appears this bed straddles that line in a quite engaging way.
I personally provided the bed a 6 as I discovered its cover and latex convenience layer helped to soften up the firmness of the taken coil system. For some of my coworkers, however, they were truly only able to experience the coils as they rapidly pushed through the mild comfort layer. Regardless of firmness, we were all in contract that the structure is very bouncy, which tells me this could be a great pick for combo sleepers, particularly those who turn between their backs and sides in the night.
Unwinding on this Mattress.
I should also note that if you enjoy the environmentally friendly profile and bounce of the mattress, but absolutely need something a little more plush, you can always opt to have an additional Avocado pillow top added onto the bed for $400.

Testing out the Mattresses.
While I might keep describing my experience on the Avocado in words, I ‘d much rather reveal you what I’m speaking about than just keep informing you about it. So, to that end, I’m going to stroll you through a number of my favorite tests for evaluating Pressure Relief and Motion Transfer.
When I think about pressure relief, I’m mostly interested in how well (or not well) the mattress in question has the ability to alleviate tension at sensitive areas like the shoulders, hips, and lower back.
To figure all that out, I like to use a convenient dandy pressure map. I roll this baby out, hop aboard, and let the device do the rest! As I walk around, the gadget tracks how my body’s connecting with the bed in real time, and develops a colored “map” to show the pressure it experiences. Areas of low pressure are demarcated in blue, and locations of high pressure are in red.
Showing the pressure map results for the Avocado.
Back– Stretching out on my back, I felt some great pressure relief as the leading layer of latex foam completed the area at my lumbar region. Furthermore, I discovered it incredibly easy to move around and change positions, which could be great for those restless sleepers in the lot.
Side– Though I felt some initial convenience on my side, the longer I stayed in this position, the more pressure I experienced. That’s not too unexpected, as stringent side sleepers tend to apply a great deal of force on their shoulders and hips. Nevertheless, it does inform me that this bed might be a bit too firm for those who just oversleep the lateral position. But, back/side combo sleepers ought to be simply fine!

Stomach– Turning onto my stomach, I felt fine, not terrific. I thought the filched coils would do more to raise my hips in line with my shoulders, but I was sort of disappointed to find that they rather sank out of positioning. This caused some tension at my lower back, so if you are a strict stomach sleeper taking a look at the Avocado I would choose the standard variation.
Testing out the Avocado with Pillow Top and Motion Transfer.
For my next test, I’m going to analyze the Avocado’s motion transfer, or the quantity of motion detectable from one side of the bed to the other. An important section for all sleepers, but specifically so for those who share their beds with a partner.
To show this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb. steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and determined the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

These are extremely high movement transfer results, so you’re likely to feel your bed mate’s every toss and turn. This isn’t too unexpected thinking about how bouncy this bed is, but could be something for you to think about if you have an especially restless partner.

Differentiation of Organic Mattress Companies
Now that we’ve got the Avocado basically well and sorted, let’s take a 2nd to compare it to a few of its greatest competitors: the Saatva and Zenhaven mattresses.
The Saatva is developed with a traditional innerspring feel, so is a fair bit firmer than the Avocado.
Its coil-on-coil building is likewise supremely encouraging and works to promote a healthy spinal alignment no matter the position.
All of this makes it a fantastic mattress for back sleepers searching for firm support and movement.
It’s also less expensive than the Avocado, starting at $599.
Check out my complete Saatva mattress review and see why it landed on my guide to the Best Mattresses for Back Pain.
The Zenhaven is an all-latex mattress made by Saatva (not a bed-in-a-box).
It’s likewise flippable, with two different firmnesses folks can change between by merely turning over the bed.
Considering that it’s constructed completely of all-natural latex, the bed is both extremely bouncy and extremely cooling, which could be a great combination for anybody who overheats.
In terms of cost, it’s the most costly of the three, starting at $1,299.

Second of all, I like this mattress for back/side combo sleepers. The bounce of the springs coupled with the lift of the latex produces some exceptional mobility.
And lastly, this is an actually long lasting bed, so must last you for a great long while.
